2015 Snapshot Day Promo Tips

Here are some tips to help you get ready for Snapshot Day 2015!

  • Like our NJ Snapshot Day Facebook page!
  • Make sure staff knows about Snapshot Day – put it in a newsletter, mention it at a meeting, put up a sign in the break room.
  • Brainstorm with fellow staff members to identify what services and programs to highlight at your library.

Who is doing what on Snapshot Day? Make sure staff is clear on their role (camera duty?), and have access to forms (find them here). Get everyone on the same page about the services and programs being highlighted now, so you don’t miss a moment.

Invite local stakeholders – like the mayor, councilmembers, church leaders, school officials – to the library for a casual visit on Snapshot Day. Show them what the library has been up to and how the community is using it. Even better, they will love the photo op!

Send out a media advisory now (and find a template here)! If you’re planning something big for October 21 – or another day – let the local media know so they can carry your story further.

Background:

What would happen in New Jersey if there were no libraries? To answer that question, the NJ State Library and NJ Library Association initiated “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of NJ Libraries,” to capture the impact libraries have on their communities during a typical day. Since its launch in 2009, librarians from all types of libraries have participated – from the tiniest facility to the largest county systems – and we found that on a typical day in New Jersey, more than 160,000 people visit libraries, and librarians answer nearly 20,000 reference questions.

Snapshot Day gives a glimpse into the day-to-day activities of New Jersey’s libraries. Participating librarians—from public libraries, K-12 and university libraries, and hospital and government libraries—are asked each year to track the total number of visitors on a given day and to record the library services that were used. This provides a way for libraries of all types across a state, region, system or community to show what happens in a single day in their libraries.

How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding a job? Doing their taxes? Doing their homework?

This initiative provides an easy means to collect statistics, photos and stories that will enable library advocates to prove the value of their libraries to decision-makers and increase public awareness.

Did you know that Snapshot Day originated in New Jersey? Developed by the New Jersey State Library (NJSL) in partnership with the New Jersey Library Association, the first Snapshot Days were held on February 19 and October 7, 2009.  Based on the success of NJ’s Snapshot Day, the American Library Association (ALA) decided to take Snapshot Day to a national level, and states across the country have conducted their own versions of Library Snapshot Day. Events have been held in 41 states and Canada, and the initiative received the 2011 ALA President’s Advocacy Award. American Libraries featured Snapshot Day in an article, noting New Jersey, California, Wisconsin and Florida’s participation. To see a list of Snapshot Day events by state, visit: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/advleg/statelocalefforts/snapshotday/states.

In 2012, Snapshot Day featured a new enhancement – the New Jersey Library Roadshow.  Inspired by OCLC and Library Journal and sponsored by LibraryLinkNJ, a team led by Andy Woodworth and Sophie Brookover, and a State Library team comprising the State Library’s Library Development Bureau and Marketing staff traveled the state, reporting on the Snapshot Day happenings in real-time via Tumblr.
